Excess Baggage
Taking your board away? We recommend you check with the airlines or holiday companies about costs before you travel.
* If you are heading to Bali remember there is a tax for taking in more than three boards.

In general holiday companies will take your board for £30 service charge.
These are some of the charges we’ve come across. We believe they are correct as of 5/05/06, but talk to your travel agent, and get confirmation in writing.
Shorthaul flights

Ryanair
£2.50 per bag for checked luggage
Boards £15 pre-booked, £20 at airport per item not exceeding 32kg.
Easyjet
£15 charge and £15 handling fee if required plus any excess baggage charge @ £5 per kilo
Fly be
£2 prior to airport arrival. £4 at check in. Must be booked in advance and there is a charge of £20 per sector. On the turboprop aircraft they must be no longer than 4.5 feet in length. On jet aircraft they can be up to 10 feet in length.
BMI
£2.00 per bag for pre booked checked luggage. £4.00 for checking luggage on arrival. Boards £15 per item but the item must not exceed 20kg in weight.
American
Boards £62 check this before booking AA are notoriously bad for charging for boards per sector. If possible fly with someone else.
Holiday companies
Usually charge £30 handling through Seviceair.
Longhaul flights
In general most companies will take your board as part of your allowance on long haul flights. there are exceptions though. We recommend you do not travel with AA, KLM or Iberia.
These surfer friendly airlines allow a surfboard free allowance
British Airways - One to length of 2.77m, within allowance
Japan Airlines - No Charge within allowance £33 per kilo if over.
Singapore Free??
Qantas Free - must not exceed 32kg (66lb) weight 277cm (109in) length.
Continental One allowed as checked baggage per customer. If travelling within the US a $80 service charge applies each way.
United One surfboard, maximum 2 boards per case.
Emirates No charge up to 3 meters in length Lufthansa
Free within baggage allowance, 50 euro if over within europe. 100 euro world-wide.
Virgin Atlantic
One checked bag and one surfboard will incur a charge of 50% of excess. If taking two bags the first surf board is charged at 50% excess and the second board is charged at full excess rates. £60- £100 per piece.

Surf unfriendly airlines
These guys have really bad reputations with the surfer we know have travelled with them (including us) for over charging for boards. We recommend you use alternatives were you can.
Iberia Do not fly Iberia. They charge ridiculous amounts for surfboards.
AA (American Airlines) Do not fly AA. They charge ridiculous amounts for surfboards.
