Bosko Interview
By Frank

How did you get into it, Pete?
Into what?
Photography.
Oh! (Laughs). Well, I love surfing and my Dad used to clown around with photographs and cameras and that when I was a little punk. So I always loved photography and I love surfing so I thought I would combine them both.
What gear do you use and how much does it cost?
Different lenses, 600mm or 7200mm lenses, fish eyes, all Canon gear. Anywhere between AU $30,000 to 60,000.
Do you generally shoot the same beaches, and if so which ones?
Not generally the same beaches. Just wherever there are good waves, generally round Newcastle. It’s good.
Do you find water photography more rewarding than land?
It depends on the conditions. You can get a magic shot on land on the right day and you can get a magic shot from the water on the right day. It just depends on the conditions. But when you get back a roll of water shots I think that's a bit more exciting than land stuff.
What makes a good shot in your view?
Colour, sharpness, action and angles. Always look out for good angles.
Did you have any formal training to get into photography?
Not formal training, I just learnt by my mistakes and I went to a college and learnt a bit there. You make a mistake, work out what you did wrong and then you go back and try it again. It costs a lot of money to do it, but in the long run it’s worth it.
Do you surf yourself?
Yes, I do.
Have you got any favourite surfers to shoot?
I love to shoot everyone, I can’t really separate anyone from anyone else 'cos everyone has got their own style. Everyone is good to shoot, I just love shooting all the pros, they’re great fun.
Do you make good cash?
Nah mate, photographers are on shit money! (Laughs)
Is it expensive developing film and so on?
Yeah, it is in Australia, you get ripped off here. You gotta pay AU$27 for a roll here where in America you can buy one for I think about five dollars, so that’s like 10 Aussie dollars.
So, how do you pay for all your airfares and your trips?
Errr. I go out on the street with a guitar and I play music and beg! (Laughs) Nah.
So you don’t sell your ass then?
(Laughs) Nah, it’s already been used. Nobody likes second hand gaskets! I used to pay for a lot of my own stuff but I’m just lucky I suppose. A lot of people help to pay for things. I can’t let too much out, trade secrets.
So what do you think of Beckham’s recent stint on the bench and do you think Fergie’s given the title away?
They haven’t thrown the title away dickhead! (Remembers I’m a City fan.) Where’s that question? Who's done this question, Chris? Holy shit! They haven’t thrown the title away! You’re a w@*ker Chris, I can’t believe you put that question in! That’s boolshit. I don’t know why Becks is on the bench, I think that Ferguson’s lost it. He’s too old and senile, they gotta change him.
